Back at the hotel or the airport, you may already have scanned dozens of paper business cards. Text recognition helps, but trade-show lighting, glare, and stylish layouts trip it up—and the fields that go wrong most often are exactly the ones you need to follow up.
This note is not a how-to on photographing a card. It is one checklist: which four fields to verify by hand before WhatsApp or email.
Four fields to check
- Phone — a missing or extra digit, or a messy country code, and the follow-up never lands.
- Email — l vs 1, o vs 0, and misspelled company domains are the usual culprits.
- Company — bilingual lines, abbreviations, or a group name above the real business; save what you will search later.
- Name — family/given swapped, or mixed English and Chinese; prefer the form they used when you met.
Why shows trip OCR
Glare and shadows, vertical or design-heavy layouts, several numbers on one card, and handwritten corrections at the booth—all of these make automatic recognition miss characters. Check against the original card for the contacts you must follow tomorrow.
